HIV Positive In Elementary School

A friend of mind found out that her daughter’s best friend in
elementary school is HIV positive.  She is frantic.

What advice would you give to deal with the situation.  I heard
that there is no real danger in spreading the HIV virus through
normal social contact.  How would you safeguard your child while
at school and when they go visit the HIV-postive child?

I’d keep her away from ignoramuses like this poor kid’s mother.

The same precautions you use when you visit your doctor.

My advice would be to GET A CLUE!

Your child does not need to be safegaurded from the HIV+ child, unless
they are planning to have sex with each other!!!

Take your head out of the sand….your child is more dangerous to the HIV+
child than he/she will be to yours!

more a threat to the HIV+ child than the other way around.
However, that said, there are some things that the children should know.
Kids, get hurt and bleed, etc., and the children should be told to call
a grown up. The grown up should be knowledgeable about making sure that
the kids don’t panic and that the most usual precautions are taken.
In the public schools in Michigan, all kids no matter what the status
are treated in school yard accidents using universal precautions. All
teachers must take inservices in universal precautions each year. Also,
the kids from kindergarten on up are told that if anyone is bleeding to
call a teacher, school nurse, or volunteer parent. These procedures are
used with every kid in the school, as they should be, whether there is
an HIV+ student in the school or not…. that way, no one gets
    discriminated against or treated differently.
Reassure your friend that causal playing, sharing a coke out of the
same glass and all the other things kids do is SAFE!
If she is a member of her local PTO/PTA — perhaps she could suggest
that the school institute universal precautions for ALL kids.

Let her spend some time in the specialist dissident "Aids"
    websites, which will educate her.

There is absolutely no risk to the child of getting HIV infection.
However, depending on the ages of the children involved, and the views
of the parents of the infected child, this might provide an excellent
opportunity for some *real* education about:

    How HIV is not transmitted

How every person is different, special and unique, including that some
    are not perfectly healthy

Why it is important to show love, understanding and compassion if
    someone has a health problem

How society often discriminates against people who are different, and
    _why this is wrong_

    Advice #1:  Slap your friend.
Advice #2:  Have your friend slap you.

This will accomplish more than any "safeguarding" procedures you
probably expect to be offered here.  Your friend’s daughter is
quite safe from HIV in this "situation" unless she plans to have
sex with, or share a needle with, the HIV+ child.  This has been
common knowledge for many years now.

The "europeans" know that the patch will only work with people who gave gained
weight due to hypothyroidism caused by lack of iodine.  Outside places like
    Bangladesh, this is not useful.
