Project Dis-Inform
PI’s Martin Delaney is the Pied Piper of the AIDS Establishment
by James M. Scutero
When I think of a town meeting, sometimes I picture
Quakers sitting facing each other rationally discussing the
issues that face a quiet, bucolic town. Other times I picture
angry lower east side residents squaring off furiously debating
an issue with veins popping out of their necks. In both
town meeting scenarios, the participants are engaged in
dialogue. The California based AIDS organization, Project Inform,
held a "Town Meeting" on May 31, 1994 at the Loeb Auditorium at NYU.
This meeting contained little open discourse and was essentially
a three-hour didactic speech given by one man, PI’s Founder and master
of misinformation, Martin Delaney. He seemed to be on a recruitment
drive, seeking volunteers for experimental drug trials the results
of which would be his to drool over in a ghoulish and voyeuristic
way. As he proclaimed the results of previous trials to a fearful
and captive community, often prefacing his statements with a "Royal
We", Delaney appeared to revel in his status as a self-proclaimed
AIDS Messiah. A few audience members came to this forum however,
not to praise Delaney but to bury him.
Members of New York’s Health Education AIDS Liaison (HEAL)
distributed anti-Delaney literature to the audience before the
meeting. One flyer had the following paragraph emblazoned across
its top:
PROJECT: DELANEY
Before you plan your future with the WIZARD OF AIDS, you should
know that in terms of CURE and long term HEALTH benefits the
recommendations and strategies of Project Inform have been, and
continue to be, a 100% FAILURE!
The flyer went on to demonstrate how Delaney was marketing "HIV
Disease" and how Project Inform was selling a "deadly bill
of goods to Gay men" by "setting up profitable markets for deadly
HIV treatments and research." Considering PI was founded on the
basis of conducting a community-based trial of the drug ribavirin
(a failed nucleoside analog similar to AZT. PI received $72,000
from ICN the maker of the drug), and considering PI’s track record,
this flyer was not too far from the truth.
When Delaney had realized what had happened, he nervously grabbed
his head and formulated his damage control strategy. He drew upon
his experience as a former corporate marketing consultant and huddled
with a representative from AmFar. The American Federation for AIDS
Research (Amfar) is a foundation that only funds research based on
the HIV/AIDS theory. Delaney regained his composure and mounted a
stool which stood next to an overhead projector on the large Loeb
theater stage. He then dryly announced, "The one thing I want to
make clear that I’m not here to do tonight, I’m not here to debate
with anybody. I’m not here to debate whether HIV is the cause of
AIDS or not… We don’t attack what other folks say. I wish the
community can get to the point where we could recognize differences
of opinions, differences of experiences among ourselves, without
always attacking each other’s character."
These defensive and saccharine statements made by Delaney
demonstrate his lack of sincerity for he has made a career out of
attacking people with views that differ from those of his own.
Journalists are his usual targets. Delaney is notorious for firing
off diatribes in which he berates writers who disagree with the AIDS
establishment. Celia Farber, a prolific writer who has questioned
HIV’s role in AIDS, has been called a "threat to public health"
by Delaney. He has also trashed SPIN magazine and its publisher Bob
Guccione, Jr. for running Farber’s articles and says that Guccione’s
motivation stems from, "a generic distrust of authority and government
science." (Actually, Delaney attacked Penthouse Magazine publisher
Bob Guccione, Sr. It seems that Delaney mistook Bob Guccione, Sr.,
the publisher of Penthouse with Bob Guccione, Jr., the publisher
of SPIN). John Crewdson, a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and
critic of Dr. Robert Gallo, has been called "a self-promoting
reporter." Bruce Nussbaum, the author of Good Intentions a book
in which Nussbaum slams Fauci and the NIH, was met by an "angry,
vituperative, threatening letter" that was sent to Nussbaum’s editor
by our hero. Delaney has also attacked the Atlantic Monthly, the
London Times and the Miami Herald for running "the anti-HIV story."
Filmmakers are not safe from Delaney’s clutches, either. Joan
Shenton, an award winning filmmaker from Great Britain, had the
unfortunate luck to run into Delaney at the Berlin AIDS conference.
When Ms. Shenton questioned Martin Delaney on the heterosexual
spread of AIDS, Delaney grabbed her. "So excited did he become,
that he grabbed me in a vice-like grip.", recalls Shenton in her
documentary, Diary of an AIDS Dissident, produced by her film
company Meditel, London.
The New York Native, a gay newspaper, has felt the scratch of
his claws. In a 1992 Project Inform newsletter, Delaney rants how
The Native’s, "views seem driven not by any scientific data but by
a seething hatred for Dr. Robert Gallo, co-discoverer of HIV,
apparently begun when Gallo rejected the publisher’s ‘swine fever
virus’ theory. Since then, The Native is obsessed with Gallo and
probably hasn’t run a single issue without some strident attack on
him…" Any reader of The Native knows that Dr. Robert Gallo was
criticized by The Native long before he denied any connection
between HHV6 and "AIDS" and that there have been editions of The
Native, albeit very few, where Gallo has not been the focus of
attention. Delaney shows his lack of good judgement when he adamantly
defends a researcher like Gallo.
Dr. Robert C. Gallo has recently announced that he has an
experimental compound, which he feels, is a promising treatment for
Kaposi’s sarcoma. The Journal of the American Medical Association
has printed a report by Dr. Marlys H. Witte et al. of the University
of Arizona in Tucson which describes how the authors attempted, but
failed, to duplicate Gallo’s KS experiments. Another researcher named
Dr. H.J. Carroll also found Gallo’s findings to be flawed. When both
reports were rejected by Science magazine, the Tucson researchers
decided to print their findings in JAMA.
In an article entitled, "U.S. inquiry discredits Gallo on AIDS
patent – Diagnostic test claims were riddled by holes, probe says"
by John Crewdson which appeard in the Chicago Tribune on 6/19/94,
Gallo was exposed once again. Crewdson writes, "A two-year inquiry
by the inspector general’s office of the Department of Health and
Human Services has found no evidence to support Dr. Robert Gallo’s
claim that he was the original inventor of the widely used diagnostic
blood test for AIDS." Gallo has personally received more than $700,000
in royalties from the sale of this test. He was the first government
scientist to receive royalties from a test that was developed with
U.S. tax dollars. President Ronald Reagan, according to Gallo, changed
the law enabling him to receive these royalties
Delaney has been on record as saying that people like Gallo
and Fauci , "are the only partners we have in this war." This
ridiculous statement is only compounded by Delaney’s attacks on
scientists who challenge the HIV/AIDS paradigm. Robert Root-
Bernstein, PhD. (associate professor of physiology at Michigan
State University and MacArthur Fellowship recipient), Kary Mullis
(1993 Nobel prize winner for Chemistry and inventor of the PCR test)
and Dr. Joseph Sonnabend (a leading primary care physician) have
all been belittled by Delaney because of their views, but he spews
his most venomous, maniac, vitriol towards Professor Peter Duesberg
(Member of the National Academy of Sciences, the first man to map
the genetic structure of retroviruses, discoverer of the oncogene,
recipient of an Outstanding Investigator Grant from the NIH, the
foremost opponent of the HIV/AIDS hypothesis and all around good
guy).
Delaney’s attacks on Duesberg border on the insane. He
flippantly accuses Duesberg of being a racist and a homophobe. Nothing
could be further from the truth. Delaney uses the nonsensical argument
that "…Duesberg’s supporters and the media spread misinformation
when they present him as an ‘AIDS researcher’ in the sense that phrase
is usually meant." If an "AIDS researcher" is one that feeds at the
pharmaceutical and government trough for funding by merely parroting
the HIV/AIDS party line, then yes, Duesberg is not an AIDS researcher.
He just knows everything there is to know about retroviruses; HIV
being the one that Delaney thinks causes AIDS. Professor Duesberg
feels that HIV is harmless.
Delaney proceeded to tell his NYU captives that, "I think in
this process we need a diversity of viewpoints. Believe it or not
I believe there is room for diversity in viewpoints among people
with AIDS." Gee, Thanks Martin!
In the HIV propaganda piece entitled, AIDS RESEARCH: The Story
so Far, produced by WGBH, Boston, Delaney spoke about vaccines as
if she was The AIDS Czarina herself. I say this for the simple reason
that she uses the royal form of "we" so many times:
"It’s crazy to think that we’re gonna solve this problem
without taking risks along the way, and frankly, that we’ll
ever be able to solve it without losing some lives in the
battle. Just like any other war, you know, some lives will
be volunteered and lost, I hate to say that, but will be
volunteered and lost along the way to the path to discovery.
It’s already happened in this disease. It’s happened with
every drug that we’ve developed. Um ah, and its gonna have
to happen with vaccines. Ah, I think Dr. Fauci and the others
need to know that there is a large class of people out there,
uninfected people, who are willing to take those risks, myself
included. Ah, to make progress, ya know, and I think we have
to recognize on this ethical
…
