A poem written by a wonderful wife and mother (who is HIV+)

IT WEARS NO FACE

   It wears no face

It has no style, It has no grace

It’s sometimes Black

It’s sometimes White

And in the beginning

   There is no light.

  As time wears on

     It forms a face

     Full of sorrow,

 Not a day to waste.

 You’ll  never guess

 You’d  never know

The way my eyes have opened so.

By the Blessings that the Lord
Bestows.

 Make me a Vessel

    I prayed to Him

Now that I’m Forgiven of my Sin.

Use me Lord in any way,

                                                   That you see fit,

                                                    In every day
     .

 The face it claims

 Could be anyone,

Father, sister, or your son.

It goes by names like "Fear" and  "Hate"

                                                While others judge

 It’s just your fate.

                                          But before you condemn

Before you decide,

You’ll have to put away your pride,

                                              Your prejudice

                                                      and

Your judgement too

Because someday it might be affecting you.

                                           Now it wears a face

It has some style, It has some grace.

With no more sorrow,With no more tears,

That face is mine

                                          Which the reflection mirrors.

                                            And the peace I get

                                           From the Lord Above

Is all about His Holy Love.

                                                    Karri

Fwd: Nerve Growth Factor

Recently, Genentech presented data at the American Neurologist
Association Meeting in Miami Florida of the results of a phase II
diabetic neuropathy study that demonstrated there was significant
inprovement in response to heat and cold. What this means is that Nerve
Growth Factor has an effect on small fiber neurons in stead of large
fiber neuorns, and this is significant since HIV associated peripheral
neuropathy is primarily a small fiber neuropathy. There was also an
overall reduction in pain as measured by "accepted pain scales." The
results have motivated Genentech to move ahead with a 1600 patient
phase III study and to use this to go for approval. Hence there are
many folk with Diabetic Neuropathy athat live longer than PWA’s, that
is where the big money is.
ACTG#291 is a phase II study of rhNGF v/s placebo for HIV associated
Peripheral Neuropathy. Participants can take any adjuctive treatment to
control pain. Unfortunately, Genentech has not made a commitment to
trial participants to recieve study drug at all following the study.
ACT UP Golden Gate will be meeting with Genentech very soon. We would
like to hear from PWA’s that have neuropathy and are interested in
receiving rhNGF. Your testimonies will be critical in convincing
Genentech to do the ethical thing and supply study drug to
participants, if they choose, when their regamin is completed.
Currently, there is no commitment to ever give trial participants NGF
after the study.
NGF is the only drug that has the potential to repair damaged nerves or
protect them. Hence this study is the most important peripheral
neuropathy trial in the history of HIV.

breast cancer

"Together to an End",  The First Canada – U.S.  Breast Cancer Advocacy
Conference

November  17-20, 1996
Geneva Park  Conference Centre
Orillia,  Ontario

Conference Organizer
PISCES, Pat Kelly, President

Secretariat
O’Donoughue & Associates (o…@cam.org)

THE GROWTH OF BREAST CANCER ADVOCACY IN CANADA AND THE U.S.

Since the 1980′s there has been a significant increase in the number of
Canadian breast cancer groups and research organizations.  Each  person
and/or group  brings a unique approach to the collective effort to end the
suffering caused by breast cancer.

In the U.S., breast cancer survivors, patients and advocates have achieved
remarkable advances through the collective efforts of organizations such as
The National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO), The National
Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), and the Y-ME National Breast Cancer
Organization.

Since its beginnings in 1991, the U.S. National Breast Cancer Coalition
(NBCC) and its 350+ member organizations have dedicated their advocacy
efforts to "work to eradicate breast cancer through focusing national
attention on breast cancer and by involving patients and caring others as
advocates for action, advances and change."

In Canada, the 1993 National Forum on Breast Cancer marked a beginning for
many Canadian activists, survivors, researchers, government bureaucrats and
health-care providers who were seeking effective partnerships for their
advocacy efforts.  Many Canadians concerned about breast cancer believe
that the time is now for a national breast cancer coalition in Canada.
"Together To An End", The First Canada-U.S. Breast Cancer Advocacy
Conference is your opportunity to join in the pioneering effort to create
a national breast cancer coalition in Canada.

DEFINITELY NOT ANOTHER BREAST CANCER ORGANIZATION

"Together To An End",  is not just another breast cancer event.  Rather,
the conference will support co-operation and communication among existing
organizations.  By creating a strong, national coalition, built upon the
strengths and leadership of existing organizations, Canadians can renew all
of our efforts to end the suffering caused by breast cancer.
The findings of a pre-conference survey of 40 key-informants indicates that
the time has come for a change in Canada’s breast cancer efforts.
Canadian breast cancer patients, advocates and caring others are seeking to
create open communication, collective leadership and vision in the Canadian
breast cancer movement.  Canadians are also seeking ways in which they can
access and make use of information technology to stay informed about the
rapid changes which affect our understanding and decision-making about
breast cancer.

WHO WILL BE AT THE CONFERENCE

The 250 conference participants will come from across Canada and the U.S.
The delegates will include key decision-makers from  breast cancer support,
advocacy and information groups, oncologists, nurses, social workers,
researchers, government
representatives, related industry representatives, corporate
sponsors, media and journalists, representatives from breast
cancer charities and foundations.

THE ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED at the Conference

How might we increase funding for research?
How might we increase access to treatments and clinical trials?
How might we increase the influence of women living with breast cancer, in
all aspects of decision-making about the disease?
What guidelines are needed for corporate funding of breast cancer groups?
How can a breast cancer coalition effectively influence  health policy?
How might  the media help a coalition to influence public policy?
How is cancer research currently organized and funded in Canada?
Who are the breast cancer charities and organizations, and what are they doing?
How can a Canadian breast cancer coalition contribute to a research agenda?
Why are there differences in breast cancer treatment and survival?
Do Canadian and U.S. women receive different treatments?
Should there be a cancer coalition or a breast cancer specific coalition?
What should the government of Canada be doing about breast cancer?

TNF's effect on HIV's replication and entry.

In an earlier post, I wrote about how marijuana lowers TNF IN VITRO.
That article can be found on the cannabis link of the misc.health.aids
homepage.

Billie Goldberg recently cited the following study on sci.med.aids:

Herbein G, Montaner LJ, Gordon S. Tumor necrosis factor alpha inhibits
entry of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 into primary human
macrophages: a selective role for the 75-kilodalton receptor. Journal of
Virology, 1996 Nov, 70(11):7388-7397.

The study discusses how TNFalpha can inhibit entry of HIV into macrophages
IN VITRO but not in other cells that can be infected by HIV.

"…In contrast to the inhibition of viral entry into primary
TCDM, pretreatment with the hrTNFalpha did not modify HIV-1 entry
into phytohemagglutinin A-activated peripheral blood lymphocytes.
TNFalpha-pretreatment inhibited HIV-1 replication in primary TCDM but
not in phytohemagglutinin A-activated peripheral blood lymphocytes as
assessed by decreased reverse transcriptase activity in culture
supernatants…"

The study acknowledges that TNF levels are higher in some patients with
AIDS.

"…Soluble TNF-R2 has been detected in the circulation of patients with
AIDS at significantly higher levels than in control subjects and has been
proposed as a marker of disease progression…"

It also explains that TNFalpha promotes cellular immunity in other
diseases.

"…Page 7395: The beneficial function of TNFalpha in cellular immunity to
parasitic pathogens such as Leishmania species is well established…"

Herbein G. et al. appear to want a therapy that promotes cellular
immunity while lowering TNFalpha’s promotion of HIV replication.

"…Therefore, the role of TNF-alpha in HIV infection is complex, and
further studies are needed to determine whether inhibition of entry and
enhancement of HIV infection by TNFalpha might be uncoupled in primary
macrophages…"

Cannabis has been shown to lower TNFalpha IN VITRO and does not appear to
damage cellular immunity IN VIVO.

The   vast   majority   of   people   can   be  made  sensitive  to
dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), a powerful skin sensitizer. DNCB is often used
with  "recall" antigens  (e.g. tuberculin  and mumps)  to test patients for
anergy. Sensitivity to  DNCB was found in all  34 chronic marijuana smokers
who  were tested  as compared  with 96%  of 279  healthy nonsmokers. On the
other  hand,  34  patients  with  cancer,  whose  cell-mediated immunity is
sometimes decreased, showed a positive reaction in only 70% of those tested
(Silverstein  &  Lessin  1974).

Dr. Donald I. Abrams must be allowed to study the effects of cannabis on
people with AIDS so we can see what effect it has on TNFalpha and cellular
immunity IN VIVO.

Help Please!!!

Hello Everybody!
I would like you to help me.  I am writing you form Central America
where in some countries, like mine, information about aids is not
complete.  I would like you to answer me the following question:

My uncle has been detected HIV+ 8 weeks ago, but he doesn’t know where
or when he caught it.  His wife and his two children (5 and 10) took a
blood test, but it apparently is negative.  My questin is, where can we
be safe, my aunt and my cousins are not infected???  My uncle is now
been thiner, and he is throwing out everything he eats.  Is this the
begining of the end??  Or he can be treated so he could be alive for a
couple of years??  The illness was detected to late??  How many more
time i have to expect to be sure my cousins are not infected too??  This
blood test is 100% sure , or they have to be taking the blood test too??
I would appreciate you send me your answer as soon as possible please!!!

Thanks!!

If you think a virus is alive, your brain is DOA

The huge amounts of advice spewed out of this group is mind boggling.
Not only is most of it in error, taught in colleges that accept bribe
money from industry, but it is down right dangerous.  Case in point, the
virus.

If a virus is dead, as it is and has no life form and never did, how
does it think and know how to travel in the human body.  Its makeup of
dead genetic material is leftover from the destruction process of the
lysosomes.  The answer is, it is "debris" in the system waiting for
expulsion or taken in as food (phagocytosis) by the cell.  The body
knows what it is doing and that is more than I can say for many on this
site, especially the Md.’s and Phd.’s and the rest of the degrees.
Funny, my thermometer has over a hundred degrees.

I posted this some time ago but obvious and intentional apathy for fact
and study runs amok — money talks.  Read the following and enjoy it and
if you don’t agree — so what!  Get a good physiology ( Guyton has a
few) and chemistry book and study, learn and think for yourself.

I can hardly wait to see the response I get from this.  Voodooism will
erupt its head giving life to the dead.  So all you lovers of the
useless field of virology sharpen your pencils.  But remember, I did not
spend my life looking for a needle in a haystack that wasn’t
there!!!!!

The Supposed Nature of Viruses:

According to the popular portrayal of the virus, it is a form of life
that parasitizes upon all forms of life including animal, plant and
saprophytic (fungi and bacteria).

FACT:   What are called viruses are entirely of genetic material and have
no characteristics of life other than being of organic material and
construction identical to that of the genomes contained within cellular
mitochondria.  In short, what are called viruses are always dead and
incapable of any acts whatsoever.  Dead matter may be acted upon but
never acts of itself.  It is voodooistic to ascribe any activity of any
kind to totally dead inanimate matter.
According to the Time article, a virus is described as a bizarre
creature seemingly designed to inflict woe on humans, animals and
plants.  Diseases are the result of the malevolent acts of viruses, and
the intent of the article is to acquaint us with the tiny creature that
causes them.

FACTS:  Viral diseases, so-called, are always manifestations of body
actions undertaken to detoxify and repair itself.  A virus is not a
creature, it is a dead bit of genetic material partially or wholly
enclosed in a capsid or a double protein sheath.  That this bit of dead
material should have actions of any kind is roughly akin to attributing
actions to the decapitated head of a dead person.

Only living organisms are capable of acting and reproducing; all units
of life have a directing or control mechanism called a head, a nucleus
or a genome; and, there is never a head, nucleus or genome without an
organism to direct.  This indicates the absurdity of this devilish
imposition called virus.

Poison Falls by Paine Ellsworth

My heart goes out to one and all — this has truly become a
challenge that can directly touch us all — did HIV *really*
come from Africa, as many believe?  and what *is* the
possibility of a country finding a viable cure, and keeping
it under wraps due to political/proprietary considerations?

All are welcome to surf over to my page (link below) and
review my novel on this subject — God bless!
